Just a Thought: Can a Sea of Red Break a 29-Year Game 7 Curse?

Published May 17, 2026 · An Unfiltered Sabres Perspective

After that insane 8-3 explosion at the Bell Centre, I couldn't sleep. Pulling Alex Lyon after three quick goals, watching Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen slam the door shut with 18 straight saves, and seeing Rasmus Dahlin drop a historic 5-point performance—it felt like classic, chaotic Sabres hockey. But now we are staring directly down the barrel of a Game 7 on Monday night, and the historical math is keeping me awake.

Let's look at the actual reality of Game 7s for both of these franchises, because the history is heavy.

"The Montreal Canadiens are absolute ghosts in deciding games. They have won their last three straight Game 7s—and get this—every single one of them was won on the road, including stunning Tampa Bay earlier this postseason. Since the turn of the century, Montreal has played in eight Game 7s, winning seven. They thrive in hostile territory."

Now look at Buffalo. The Sabres haven't won a Game 7 since April 1997 when Derek Plante scored in overtime against Ottawa. Our last trip to a Game 7 was all the way back in 2011 against Philadelphia, which ended in a heartbreaking 5-2 loss. It has been a long, quiet stretch since we've tasted winner-take-all glory.

The Home Ice Mind Game

Here is the kicker: Both Montreal and Buffalo have been profoundly weird at home this postseason. Both squads are exactly 2-4 on home ice in the 2026 playoffs. Buffalo has looked loose, dangerous, and aggressive on the road, but tight when the home pressure mounts at KeyBank Center.

So, I had a thought. What if we don't give them a standard home game?

Imagine how cool it would look if the arena completely transformed. What if every single body in the seats wore solid red? I'm talking red T-shirts, red Bills jerseys, red vintage Sabres jerseys. A massive, intimidating wall of red.

It’s an opinion, sure, but think about the psychology. Montreal is used to skating into hostile barns and stealing wins. Buffalo is used to playing with a chip on their shoulder when they are away. If we paint the arena red, we disrupt the visual pattern. We throw a wrench into the Canadiens' road comfort zone, and we give our guys that gritty, "us against the world" road energy that saw them score 7 unanswered goals on Saturday night.

It's unconventional, it's wild, but it's a Game 7. History is waiting to be rewritten on Monday night. Why not turn the building upside down to do it?

What do you think? Do we wear the red? You decide.
